Although our SREY isn’t on
Broadway, she is our very own “triple threat”—a committed SRC parent, an
exemplary employee (who’s working toward her teaching certification), and a
champion for our community. Four years ago, our nominee left her job as a dental
hygienist to work as a paraprofessional. Her reason was partly because her child
(who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis) was starting Kindergarten. She thought
that it would be helpful to be nearby if he ever needed her. However, the
students and staff here have come to realize that we have needed her just as
much (if not more) than he does!! In addition to her time spent working with
struggling readers in the Early Intervention Program, she has coordinated
numerous school-wide events including the quarterly positive behavior reward
system for our cafeteria. She brought in the Blue Wahoos for our Reading
Kick-off. For last year’s space theme, she contacted a former NASA astronaut and
coordinated his visit; not just for our school, but for several others in our
county. She recently invited the Pace and Milton drumlines, cheerleaders, and
UWF football players to join in celebrating our students’ reading goals. Our
triple threat also co-leads the Literacy Committee which provides Christmas
book-inspired treats for our staff and much more! We are lucky to have her and
we believe she would be perfect to represent Santa Rosa County since she is
already a “STAR” in our book!
